Paul is a wonderful artist and tutor. One of our main tutors with Arte Umbria as we adore his work. His knowledge of Venice is vast and he has produced some stunning paintings there over the years so he is perfectly suited to teach in this most beautiful of locations. Please have a look at his website Paul O'Kane Website
What the course will offer
Painting with Paul around different locations in Venice for 6 days. There will be lots of demonstrations by Paul and one-to-one tuition. It is entirely up to you if you want to jump in and out of painting, or you can take advantage of ‘sightseeing’ at your leisure. We paint away from the busy tourist locations, but everywhere is a painting location in Venice. You are of course welcome to site see as much as you want. This week is perfect if you want to come with a non-painting partner as there is so much for them to see and do in Venice whilst you are out and about painting and they can join you with a big discount. For non painters, your hostess Seraphina Moody Seraphina Moody's Website will be there and happy to share photography tips and go out on photography trips with you.You are spoilt for choice in this romantic, historic city. All the pleasure, quality tutoring and congenial company you’ve come to expect from Arte Umbria but this time it will be in this beauteous location. Due to Paul's popularity, this course will fill very quickly, from Europe and Internationally, and as places are limited early booking is essential to ensure you don't miss out.
Paul knows some lovely places to paint. A love view of the Accademia from Campo S Vio. The Calle Dose da Ponte gives a smashing view of Santa Maria Della Salute. John S Sargent painted from there. As did Monet and Ken Howard. It’s a cul-de sac and very quiet. Great spot. A visit to Squero di San Trovaso is the Gondola repair yard. A very popular location for artists. Calle Crosera is an easy to reach ‘Campo’ between San Marco Cathedral & the Arsenale.
No visit is complete without a visit to the Fish Market and it's a great painting venue. The building itself is very dramatic with huge red awnings and lots of stalls and shopping activity within its open air ground floor. The market is in full swing in the morning and very quiet in the afternoon.
The buildings along the Grand Canal are fabulous. So our trick will be to get ourselves on the San Marco side of The Canal, looking across at the opposite bank when it's in full sunshine. Riva del Carbon is a good spot with tempting views toward Rialto Bridge.
Included in the price is your Vaporetto (water bus) ticket for the week that will take you everywhere in Venice and to all the islands as well, and your Alilaguna ticket for your journey to and from Marco Polo airport to the hotel.
A lovely 3 star hotel just 5 minutes from the Vaporetto station and the centre of the Lido for restaurants and shops.
All breakfasts and dinners.
We can take over the whole delightful hotel for this week for our use depending on numbers.
(We reserve the right the change the hotel to one of the same standard, should numbers dictate.)
Who can forget Visconti’s film Death in Venice with the lovely Mahler music, or Don’t Look Now? Venice is a sumptuous feast, atmospheric and beautiful even in poor weather, full of colour, history, architecture, art, food and culture.
The famous Basilica in St. Mark’s Square, countless churches and palazzi, art exhibitions - it’s a culture vulture’s paradise. We promise not to have any vertically challenged people in red coats!
We have taken over the whole delightful hotel for this week for our exclusive use which ensures a house party atmosphere - a home from home.
For any of the guests we can arrange cookery classes or private tours with our friends in Venice.
The Lido has a lovely sandy beach just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The Lido also has the best gelato and some lovely restaurants and cafes.
Testimonial from one of our guests on our Venice trip in 2016
''The Venice course was a joy and an eye-opener first to last, thanks to the unstinting efforts of sponsors David and Sara Moody. As a non-painting member of the group, I undertook crossing the pond and spending a week abroad with modest expectations: I wanted simply to "hang" with the watercolorists and their excellent instructor, see a bit of La Serenissima, and write some decent journal entries. Little did I know I was in for one of the great adventures of my life.
The artists in our group made me feel included and helpful, sometimes even asking for feedback on their paintings, while my hosts carved time from their busy schedules to take me on impromptu field trips, answer my many questions, and help with daily activities. The combination of a magical setting, comfortable lodgings, excellent meals and nonstop camaraderie proved an intoxicating blend, and even now, months later, I continue to think and write about these eight extraordinary days.
I could not have asked for a more positive travel experience and already am thinking of signing up for another course Painting in Europe, my lack of artistic talent notwithstanding. If this seminar can energize a non-painter like me, just think what it could do for someone at home with a brush and paper. Well done and I cannot wait to meet with you again! ''
